So, if you have any questions about our holidays, it’s possible they’re answered below. If not, please do just give us a call or drop us an and we’ll get right back to you with whatever you want to know.
If you’re coming by plane or train, we’re really happy to collect you from the terminal - just let us know. If you’re driving, we’ll give you directions you can trust, and if you’re bringing your own horse, rest assured your horsebox will be parked securely on our property whilst you are off having fun!
You can bring your own horse on holiday, or ride one of our fit, happy horses. Whichever you do, we promise to give you a fantastic holiday spent only with your party, we do not put people together into big groups.
If you’re riding one of our horses you should also be pretty fit and a confident rider at all paces. If you’d like to holiday on your own horse, all you have to do is box yourself over to Somerset and we’ll do the rest.
The riding is wonderful. Many people haven’t heard of the Quantocks, but we hope our trails page will give you a taster of the riding we can offer. You can see how beautiful it is up there by taking a look at our photos. A typical day will see you ride through fields, parkland, forests, streams, open moorland, up and down the combes of the Quantocks and, if you’d like it, onto the sands of the West Somerset coast…
If you are riding our horses, your party must take a guide, the cost of which will be shared amongst you. This is to ensure the safety of all our guests and our horses. If you are riding your own horses, your can ride guided or unguided. Rates can be found here.
Guides travel with you, take care of the route finding, help you with horse care each evening and morning, and are generally your helpful friend. If you are riding your own horses and choose to ride unguided, we will provide you with annotated maps and everything else you need, and you will set off alone. This means your party must be able to map read, use a compass, and take responsibility for following the trail. It’s open countryside up there, so much like if you were on a walking holiday, you’ll have to read the map and the lay of the land to successfully arrive at your destination. It’s exciting! The thrill of finding your way is what some of our guests love, but if you don’t feel confident with this, we suggest hiring a guide.
You can find out what we provide (lots), and what you’ll need to bring (not much) on our Equipment page. Once you’re here, we help you transfer your luggage to our pretty roomy saddlebags. Believe us, you can get enough for six days into these things, and on long trails, your hosts will graciously help you out with laundry if you run out of smalls.
We know you will love the accommodation and food and there’s some information on some of them here: Comfort & Food. At each stop we have arranged either stabling or pasture for your horses. So, when you arrive in the afternoon, either your guide (if you have booked one) or your host will be there to greet you and show you where everything is. You first untack and leave your equipment in a nice dry room provided for us. Then you feed the horses (food ready and waiting), and finally turn them out into their field or stable. In the morning, after breakfast you catch, feed and tack up horses in your own time and make your way back onto the trail.
We’ll work pub stops into your trail if you’d like. Each of them has been thoroughly checked out as horse-friendly by Travels on Horseback, and tie-ups are ready and waiting for you in courtyards or carparks. The landlords will be only too happy to tell you where to park!
Visit our Relax, Refresh, Revive page to see how easy we make it to kick back and relax.
If you’re wondering what the weather will be like for your holiday, you can check out the forecasts and weather patterns here. You’ll be pleased to know that the West Country has over 200 hours of sunshine every month in the summer - well above the national average!
You can find out exactly what is included in your Travels on Horseback holiday here.

We regret that in these circumstances there can be no refund to you. We will provide you with maps so that you can meet the remainder of your party at each nights’ accommodation by alternative means.

Rocky, or Rare Stone, as he is officially named, is a relaxed, fit thoroughbred. I know you may not think that the two go together, but it is possible! A 15.2hh chestnut and now 16 years old, he’s beautiful to groom and tack-up and for the good rider, a joy to ride. He loves the trail rides so much that he’ll take you wherever you want to go at an easy swinging pace – and when you want to canter, he’ll fly.
Victor (Stypewood Victor) is a 14.2hh Welsh Section B gelding and 10 years old. He’s perfect for good young riders or light adults, and is a lovely, perky ride, whilst being completely safe. He has terrific, energetic paces and particularly loves it when we reach the beach! He’s a chestnut with a beautiful arab-inspired head and a sweet white snip on his nose.
Macalan came to us from a racing yard and he loves the relaxed, natural lifestyle of a Travels on Horseback horse. A sensitive and sweet-natured beauty, he’ll always wander over to greet you, pick up his feet like a ballet dancer, and generally carry you with grace and poise, and it has to be said, some speed! He’s a 16.1h chestnut gelding, 14 years old, and with legs longer than we’ve ever seen, he covers the ground effortlessly. It’s quite a thrilling ride.
Harrington Landlord or Harry, is a pure bred Cleveland Bay gelding. Standing at 16.2, he’s the perfect strong horse to carry taller guests across the beautiful Quantock Hills. He has a fabulous warm temperament, and lovely smooth paces - his canter has been likened to travelling through the forest on a Chesterfield. He’s an impressive, noble animal with flowing mane and tail and a beautiful bright coat. He’s also currently king of the herd…
Bryn (Brynbach Royal Victor) is an adorable 15hh Welsh Section D. He’s so friendly he follows us around the field and always wants to get involved with whatever’s going on. With a glowing chestnut coat and a blond mane and tail, he’s a complete head-turner and makes his rider feel like they’re in a photo shoot! He has lively, supremely comfortable paces, and is very eager to please.
We love to take out hacks through the terrific countryside here - just call us to book a time. Our horses are suitable for intermediate to experienced riders, and we take out private rides through farmland, woods and fields. If you are comfortable, we shall certainly be cantering. All our hacking guests are given a reward card, and your sixth ride is absolutely free!
